Most language apps are a dictionary you have to remember to open, which means you do not open them. Izwi is built the other way round: the word finds you.

Every morning a different South African word or phrase appears on the home screen, with what it means and how it is actually used. Stoepkakker, a yappy porch dog. Sgubhu, a groove. Sidl’ukotini, dressed to impress. The vocabulary that everyone around you already knows and nobody ever formally taught you.

It spans isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Tsotsitaal and Kaaps, and it works as a native widget on both iOS and Android rather than as a notification you swipe away.
